He has not had a self-written more than two decades success - apart from a brief foray into classical composition - but Billy Joel catalog sets a benchmark in the history of pop.
It could make for hours and still someone Ortega,
"But he did not play" Modern Woman '! "
Surely, some fan is now doing a similar assessment Saturday night blowout Joel at Philips Arena - his first solo visit to Atlanta in seven years.
But it cannot be zero subtleties over a 20-plus-song career-spanning set list and a trio of songs related to Georgia pulled because, well, this updated version Joel really likes to play live again. And it sounds better than it has in a decade.
As he made the transition from the first explosive game, "Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)" to the still strong "pressure", Joel took a turn in his piano bench to study the full house, a small ripple smile under his beard smoke color.
Before his piano began its first rotation on a platform Lazy Susan-like mass - prime time for those who were sitting backstage with open look back - Joel recognized his surroundings in his husky New York-ese and took his band through most of "Georgia on My Mind", his idol Ray Charles doubt have approved.
I still content to ignore the set list a few more minutes, Joel said, "The last time we were here was seven years ago ... and before that, we were here with the other."
That led to his imitation matte nail piano Elton John and his "Your Song", a quick reminder of cheeky wit Joel. A few songs later, Joel stared video screens on the scoreboard above and lamented, "I look like my father now."
Never a pinup, Joel at 65 is a little grayer and fatter, but who is not? Close-up of the fingers showed agility belied his stocky appearance; his playing, along with her voice that matters much, much more than the volume (or lack thereof) of your hair.
A couple of times during the two-hour concert over, Joel allowed the audience to choose between a couples of songs. It is a tactic that has been used for years for their actions and that usually faced "Vienna" against "summer, Highland Falls".
Joel has realized the unexpected popularity of tinkling "Vienna" and simply added to the list of issues, which gave the magnificent "summer, Highland Falls" a chance to finally win the battle (this time, "Everyone loves you now "got little attention).
"Summer" is certainly the most beautiful creation of this melodic alchemist with both scorching and relatable lyrics.
But, of course, was the treasure of radio hits drilled into our consciousness that caused the crowd - "My Life," "Allentown" and "Out Movin '" which was accompanied by video in sepia tones walkups and bridges New York.
That city, city of Joel, is as much a character in his songs as Brenda and Eddie, Mama Leone and Paul real estate novelist. It is also the scene of his recent revival with an open residency at Madison Square Garden, apparently the impetus for the return of Joel on tour.
He paid tribute it deserves with "New York State of Mind," which sounded like velvet hearing and, as always, highlighted by the atmospheric sax Mark Rivera. It's the kind of song that gets the Gershwin Prize - as Joel received last fall - and has become as much a signature for him as the closure assembly to sing, "Piano Man".
For Joel faithful, seeing his eight-piece band is also a comfort, like walking into Sunday dinner in an Italian home: There Tommy (Byrnes, guitar) and Mark (Rivera, sax, flute, percussion) and Dave ( Rosenthal, keyboards) and Andy (Cichon, bass) and Chuck (Burgi, drums) and Mike (DelGuidice, guitar) and Carl (Fischer, sax, trumpet) and the MVP in elegant silence of the crew, Crystal (Taliefero, percussion, saxophone, harmonica).
Most of them have been with Joel for decades and their camaraderie was evident (see Rivera try to laugh for Joel "New York State of Mind" priceless). It also meant that Joel could decide, apparently on a whim, unleash some James Brown ("I Feel Good") and Allman Brothers Band ("Midnight Rider") and these musicians would fall into the first notes.
Joel is also a head of grace, because it gave the spotlight to Fischer during his blazing trumpet solo in the underrated "Zanzibar", a song by jazz-pop complicated demonstrating the capabilities of Joel as a composer. Byrnes draft downloaded skilled at "Sometimes a Fantasy" and multiple talents Taliefero took the spotlight for "River of Dreams".
While fans of Joel argue with Bruce Springsteen and Jimmy Buffett for a degree of loyalty, there are always plenty of rookies in their shows (evidenced by the number of people sitting in an epic "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant "- Blasphemy). The appearance of Joel lifelong roadie Chainsaw barreling through a cover of AC / DC's "Highway to Hell" had to be a hoot for the uninitiated - not to mention guitar skills-strumming chords Joel.
By the time Joel and his team reached an encore much-craved, the parade of hits was unstoppable, with "Uptown Girl" (complete with fun heist Joel), "may be right" and "Still Rock and Roll to Me, "among the selections crowd-worshiped.
At this point in his career, is unlikely to ever hear much new material from Joel. And that's fine. With the creative production that has provided since 1973, why not coast on that legacy?
But if he has been rejuvenated to the point of playing a handful of shows per month until it has blown over harmonica "Piano Man" by the 12 millionth time, then playing, sir. Play.
